For memory retention, researchers have suggested to do high-intensity workout, but a few hours after you learn something. Researchers from the Donders Institute at the Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands have based the findings on the assessment of 72 participants.

.

These participants underwent a memory test. After which, the participants were asked to learn object locations on a computer screen and then the total was divided into three groups. One sub-group performed 30 minutes of interval training directly after the task. Second sub-group did so after four hours and the third did not perform any exercise.

.

After three days, all the participants took the test again. The researchers measured their brain activity using MRI machine. The researchers said that those who performed the exercise after a delay remembered the maximum information when compared to other two groups.

.

When the participants answered the questions correctly then the researchers noticed that there was more activity in the hippocampus, a part of the brain linked with learning and memory. It is the first study to demonstrate a link between exercise and memory.

.

As per the researchers, there are many possible reasons for the link like exercises positive effect on overall brain health and presence of neurotransmitters implicated in memory consolidation and known to be boosted by exercise.

.

For now, the researchers are not sure as to why the delay affect memory and they hope to find the same in the further research. The researchers said that the four-hour window should not be strictly interpreted for exercise to be beneficial after learning.

.

There could be a possibility that the enhanced effect on learning might be larger if people worked out two hours after memory task or doing any other form of exercise.

.

To increase your chances of remembering new information, you may want to exercise 4 hours after learning it.
