Returning to Hamilton in 1961, Ellaby resumed work for the Parks Department whilst sowing the seeds for his own business.

.

Martin’s Nurseries & Garden Centre opened initially in Insoll Avenue and relocated to Rototuna Road in 1970.

.

Over the next three decades, Ellaby became what Hamilton Gardens director Dr Peter Sergel describes as a guru of Waikato horticulture, the man to turn to for advice on plants, propagation and gardening. Capable of turning on the charm for customers, he was also known to terrorise errant young children or staff. Few of the 50 odd people who worked for Ellaby Martin ever regretted it, receiving as fine an education in history, politics and geography as they did in horticulture.

.

The Martin sense of humour often expressed itself in witty letters to the editor, poking fun at prejudice or bureaucracy. His advocacy for camel racing at Days Park and the need for a “part-time witch” at the Hamilton Gardens neatly complemented Sergel’s own mischief making. “He liked poking a stick at the wasps’ nest,” says Sergel.

.

With a fine baritone voice and abilities as an actor, Ellaby graced both a Community Choir and several Music Makers productions, earning particularly good notices as Emile in South Pacific. He was also an enthusiastic tennis player, taking up the sport at 30 and being very active in Veterans Tennis for 40 years.

.

In retirement, Ellaby became involved with the Hamilton Gardens Committee (at the invitation of council), then with the Friends of the Hamilton Gardens, serving as president of that organisation, holding forth at plant propagation gatherings and often acting as tour guide around the Gardens, leading rambles with great authority.

.

Even as his eyesight failed and his health deteriorated, Ellaby was an entertaining and erudite host.

.

He was presented with several life memberships, notably of the International Plant Propagators Society, and in 2009, a Hamilton City Civic Award for Services to the Community.

.

He is survived by his second wife, Pamela, two children, his first wife, three stepchildren and six step-grandchildren.

.

In snowy places across the globe, watermelon snow forms as the summer sun heats up and melts winters leftovers. The colorful snow is made up of communities of algae that thrive in freezing temperatures and liquid water, resulting in algal blooms. When these typically green organisms get a lot of sun, they produce a natural type of sunscreen that paints the slopes pink and red. The addition of color to the surface darkens the snow, allowing it to heat up faster, and melt more quickly.

.

Imagine wearing black instead of a white T-shirt in the sun. It feels much hotter, wrote Stefanie Lutz, a geobiologist at GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences, in an email. It is the same for the snow: More heat means more melting.

.

Dr. Lutz, together with Liane Benning and their colleagues at a number of universities, published a study Thursday in Nature Communications that examined microbes in summer snow, and noted that while bacterial communities differ from place to place, the same algae that produce watermelon snow appear to be so global that its time for climate models to consider their effects on snow and ice melt.

.

Algae changes snows albedo, or how much light, or radiation, its surface reflects back into the atmosphere. Based on 40 samples from four locations, the new study estimated that blooms of snow algae can lead to an albedo decrease of 13 percent over the course of an Arctic melt season, compared with clean snow, meaning the dark snow would absorb much more light. Just how much melting this will account for, or how much that may affect sea level rise, however, is still to be determined. But algal effects on albedo are going to be important for melting glaciers, which play a huge role in the climate system, said Dr. Lutz.

Brexit: Environmentalists Fear ‘Bonfire’ of Regulations
Designed to Fight Climate Change and Protect Wildlife

Remain campaigners have argued that EU legislation has helped towards tackling water and air pollution, protect endangered species and imposed tough safeguards on the use of genetically modified crops and potentially dangerous chemicals

Regulations set in place to help fight climate change and protect Britains wildlife may be destroyed following the Brexit result, top environmentalists have warned.

.

Reacting to the vote to leave the European Union, charity groups and climate change campaigners said the result could have a devastating effect on the UK environment, since more than 70 per cent of environmental safeguarding comes from European legislation.

.

Greenpeace UK executive director John Sauven said: Many of the laws that make our drinking and bathing water safe, our air cleaner, our fishing industry more sustainable and our climate safer now hang by a thread There is a very real fear that Cameron’s successor will come from the school that supports a bonfire of anti-pollution protections.

.

In an post-referendum statement, Friends of the Earth said the group could no longer rely on the EU to protect our nature and habitats, adding that clean beaches, air quality and bees were among the factors put at risk by potential loss of EU legislation.

.

Craig Bennett, Friends of the Earths CEO, said: The referendum may be over but many of the difficult debates are only just beginning. The environment must be at the heart of our negotiations with Europe and how we create a positive future for our country. We cannot let the UK return to the days of the dirty man of Europe. Protections for our birds and wildlife, our beaches and rivers, must not be sacrificed in the name of cutting away so-called EU red tape.

.

The environment was rarely mentioned during the referendum but it must now move up the political agenda. With urgent issues like climate change, air pollution and destruction of the natural world already impacting this generation, not just the next, we dont have time for the environment to take a back seat through years of negotiations.

.

Those in favour of leaving the EU have argued that the UK may soon be free of red tape restrictions which are damaging to UK farms and fisheries, the latter being known to discard large quantities of dead fish into the sea to avoid breaking EU quotas.

.

Remain campaigners, however have praised the EUs record on environmental issues as one of its greatest achievements, arguing that union legislation has helped towards tackling water and air pollution, protect endangered species and impose tough safeguards on the use of genetically modified crops and potentially dangerous chemicals.

.

While laws that have already been adopted into English and Scottish law will still apply following the UKs departure form the EU, parliament will be able make changes should it choose.

.

Rules restricting the amount of fracking could also be lifted, since the majority of restrictions come from European directives, Greenpeace analysis suggests.

.

Green Party MP Caroline Lucas has called on progressive parties to join forces in order to resist any attack on hard won rights following Brexit.

PARIS  The torrential rain that caused flooding in France recently bore the unmistakable fingerprint of climate change, according to research recently submitted to a scientific journal.

.

Global warming, especially in the past 50 years, had almost doubled the likelihood of the kind of three-day downpour that burst the banks of the Seine and Loire rivers, they calculated.

.

At the very least, the probability of such an extreme rainfall event had increased by more than 40 percent.

.

We found that we could tie global warming directly to the recent rainstorms in France that triggered so much flooding and destruction, said Robert Vautard, a senior scientist with Frances Laboratory for Climate and Environment Sciences.

.

Early this month the Seine hit its highest water mark in three decades, while overflowing tributaries forced evacuations and left tens of thousands of people without power in nearby towns.

.

In southern Germany, heavy rain also caused flash flooding that swept away houses and cars. At least 18 people were killed in four European countries.

.

Unlike for France, the evidence was not strong enough to establish a direct link between warming and the destructive rainfall in Germany, the researchers said.

.

This does not mean that climate change did not play a key role, only that observations failed to line up with the models well enough to draw similarly robust conclusions.

.

Indeed, scientists have been struggling for years to connect the dots between climate change  best measured over centuries  and individual extreme weather events, such as superstorms or droughts.

THE GMO LABELING EAGLE HAS LANDED: After months of secret talks that left the ag world pining for the slightest drip of info, the Senate GMO labeling dam finally broke open Thursday when Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts and ranking member Debbie Stabenow unveiled a bill featuring three mandatory disclosure options: an on-package label, a USDA-developed symbol or an electronic code consumers can scan.

.

But that was only the first battle, Pro Ags Catherine Boudreau reports.
Roberts and Stabenow are now hustling to get the 60 votes needed to pass their legislation. Both have said over the last month they wouldnt bring a bill to the floor of the upper chamber unless it had support from a majority of their fellow lawmakers  and the agriculture lawmakers are now confident they can get there, Senate sources said. But its already too late for Congress to pass a measure before the Vermont law goes into effect July 1.

.

The House adjourned unexpectedly early Thursday because of Democrats sit-in protest over gun control measures. The lower chamber won’t resume business until July 5, which is when those behind the Roberts-Stabenow bill hope a companion measure can be taken up. The path in the House is uncertain. House Ag Committee Chairman Mike Conaway, who backed the voluntary GMO labeling bill that the House passed nearly a year ago, held out on supporting the Roberts-Stabenow bill Thursday, saying he needs time to review it.

THE LEFT REVOLTS OVER GMO DEAL: The left flank of the pro-labeling camp is not at all happy with the Senate deal, and they’re making their discontent known. Sanders condemnation  a move that could push the hot-button issue of food labeling into the 2016 presidential debate, despite his sunsetting hope of landing the Democratic nomination  was only the tip of the iceberg.

.

Just Label It said in a statement the bill falls short  and then tweeted a picture of a labeled product with the hashtag #nodarkact. Activists from U.S. Right to Know, a group that has been using Freedom of Information Act requests to go after industry influence in scientific research, called the bill a sweetheart deal to kill #GMO labeling.

.

Consumers Union Director of Food Policy Jean Halloran railed against the measure: “If this bill is passed by the Senate, it would be a clear case of Congress acting on behalf of industry interests, rather than on those of their constituents. We urge all senators to stand up for consumers  and real disclosure  and oppose this bill.

.

Vani Hari, the controversial blogger known as “Food Babe,” said the bill “screws consumers. She tweeted: Mark my words. Food companies that decide to use QR Codes will be targeted by major online campaigns to shame them.”

.

snip

.

FULL BACKING FROM BIG FOOD, AG: More than a dozen groups from the food, biotechnology and agriculture industries endorsed the Senate GMO labeling deal, ranging from the Grocery Manufacturers Association and the Biotechnology Innovation Organization to the National Farmers Union and the National Milk Producers Federation. They said Congress should pass the legislation as soon as possible to set a national labeling standard and avoid uncertainty and chaos in the marketplace.
