Wood Buffalo is taking steps to reduce the risk of future fires in Fort McMurray and the regions rural communities, FireSmart consultant Stew Walkinshaw told council Wednesday afternoon.

.

A priority for the Regional Emergency Operations Centre is to identify the hazards and risk of future wildfire to development in Wood Buffalo, Walkinshaw said. Once the risks to each area are known, strategies to reduce that hazard will be tailor-made to the situation.

.

We wanted to look at those areas that could be immediately impacted by fire within the region, Walkinshaw said. And to immediately implement some activities to reduce that hazard.

.

Those areas that could be immediately impacted are Birchwood Trails, Conn Creek, Anzac, Thickwood, Water Treatment Plant Hill, Confederation Way North, Abasand Hillside, Gregoire, Airport Road and the Parsons Creek area, Walkinshaw said.

.

These are not the only areas that will be looked at, he added.

.

Potential risks include post-fire green islands  patches of forest or grass that did not burn in the blaze but could potentially catch fire in the future.

.

The most obvious example of a green island in the Fort McMurray area is the Birchwood Trails network between Timberlea and Thickwood.

.

Theres also a fire risk from the mounds of flammable debris created when bulldozer crews were creating fire breaks in the forest, Walkinshaw said. The uprooted trees and plants pushed up against the adjacent forest acts as a fuel pile.

.

According to the threat in each area trees will either be removed, or thinned out to mitigate risk, Walkinshaw said.

.

Phase 1 will be removal of trees and other fuel in hazard areas immediately next to developed areas. Phase 2 will be thinning, pruning and clearing of fuel in hazard areas somewhat close to development.
