Media Literacy Education in the Social Studies:
Teacher Perceptions and Curricular Challenges
Stein, Laura; Prewett, Anita
Teacher Education Quarterly, v36 n1 p131-148 Win 2009

Media literacy education is relevant to the social studies
for a number of reasons. Media provide compelling fiction
and nonfiction narratives about people, places and events.
Indeed, many young people’s knowledge of world events
and cultures comes from media representations. Media also
helps shape attitudes and opinions about history, government
and politics. As citizens, students rely on media for information
about elections, public policy and political processes.
Consequently, media literacy education in the social studies
can promote student understanding and appreciation of the
role media play in shaping and disseminating particular views
of the world. This article focuses on social studies teachers’
familiarity with media literacy education in the classroom,
their understandings of its role and place in the curriculum,
and the implications of these views for curriculum
development and training. The study presumes that the
usefulness of media literacy education resources, as well as
their adoption, depend in large measure on whether these
materials speak to the overarching goals teachers bring to
media literacy education and their understanding of its place
in their classrooms. This article reports on the results of a
survey of a small group of social studies teachers seeking to
integrate media literacy education into their classrooms.
This exploratory research aims to help educators, administrators,
consultants and theorists begin to understand the particular
curriculum development and teacher training needs of social
studies teachers engaged in media literacy education.
The article concludes by discussing several factors that may
place an additional drag on the ability to develop training and
curricular resources, and by briefly reviewing some positive
developments in the provision of primary and secondary
teaching resources. (Contains 7 tables and 3 notes.)

Spend an afternoon at the New York Botanical Garden and youll forget youre in the Bronx.

.

Its a piece of the wilderness right in the middle of New York City, Todd Forrest, vice president of horticulture and editor of The New York Botanical Garden, said to amNewYork during a tour of the grounds.

.

That piece of wilderness hes referring to is actually a 50-acre forest, virtually untouched since the gardens founding in 1891. A national historical landmark, it also encompasses 50 specialty gardens, the largest plant library in the world, historical buildings and a portion of the Bronx River.

.

For the gardens 125th anniversary, amNewYork uncovers the secrets blooming in its flowers and hiding in its trees.

.

The Garden has a royal sister in England
In 1888, Nathaniel Lord Britton and his wife, Elizabeth Knight Britton, visited the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in London. Mesmerized by Kew’s beauty, the couple was inspired to recreate the garden in their hometown, New York.

.

To this day, many similarities remain between the New York Botanical Garden and Kew. Aside from both being in the hearts of major cities, the famous Palm House at Kew, above, left, was also imitated in the structural construction of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory in New York, Forrest said.

Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in growing things. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people.

.

What really sets Master Gardeners apart is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, people who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their Extension office to provide horticultural information to their communities.

.

Master Gardener volunteers serve in a variety of venues. They respond to telephone and email inquiries about horticultural topics, present lectures and programs for garden and civic organizations, help with school garden projects, establish and maintain demonstration gardens, educate special audiences in the community, design and maintain horticultural websites, train future and current Master Gardeners, and coordinate county Master Gardener projects and programs.

.

The Texas Master Gardener Program aims to:

.

Disseminate horticultural information to individuals and groups in Texas communities

.

Develop and enhance community projects related to horticulture, including demonstration gardens and community gardens

.

Develop a network to help administer local Master Gardener programs

.

Enhance 4-H and youth programs by establishing 4-H horticultural clubs and Junior Master Gardener groups.

Eight employees help beautify the university and medical campuses for summer

Story and video by April Dudash

Duke Today

.

.

There is a rhythm to planting hundreds of flowers in the traffic circle at Chapel Drive.

.

One person works ahead of the pack, breaking purple scaevola plants free from flats and lining them in neat rows along mulch. Others dig holes, with their gloved hands or a trowel, and drop the plants in, covering the roots with soil in quick precision.

.

Dig. Drop. Cover. Repeat.

.

The eight-person Duke horticulture team works against the clock, planting thousands of flowers before visitors flood campus for commencement weekend beginning May 13. They tackle the Chapel Drive corridor first, where the flowery focal points are the traffic circle and the Duke University Road entrance.

.

When someone turns into Chapel Drive here, the first thing theyre going to notice are our flower beds, said Andy Currin, Dukes assistant superintendent for landscape services. Were always their first impression, and that means a lot.

.

But the planting doesnt stop after graduation. In total, 27,000 flowers will be planted across the university and medical campuses for the summer season, a job that wraps up by mid-June and takes about 1,200 staff hours to complete, according to the Duke Facilities Management Department.

.

The horticulture team plants flowers during May and June and again in October and November. They are pulling up hardy pansies and snapdragons that withstand winter temperatures, spreading new mulch in flowerbeds and constantly watering.

.

Terrence Williams, a senior grounds equipment operator who has worked for 15 years with the horticulture team, said his job requires a lot of traveling across campus, from East Campus to the Duke Hospital courtyard and the front of Cameron Indoor Stadium. His team also plants at the School of Nursing, Fuqua School of Business, School of Law and other locations.

St. Johns County Horticulture Agent’s Removal Raises Questions

Supporters of Keith Fuller, the former horticulture extension agent for St. Johns County removed from his post last year by the University of Florida, say his ousting is indicative of problems greater than personnel spats at the countys Agricultural Center and symptomatic of the universitys power on the countys dime.

.

Fuller, who has also been an unpaid columnist for The Record for three decades, was given notice by UF of the non-renewal of his annual contract on Aug. 4, 2015. What ensued has become a nearly yearlong fight to regain his job, aided by Agricultural Center volunteers loyal to Fuller, against a backdrop of questions raised about St. Johns Countys memorandum of understanding with UF for extension services.

.

The terms of that memorandum, approved by the Board of County Commissioners in June 2014, changed the status of Fuller and others at the Agricultural Center from long-standing county workers to non-tenured and non-permanent employees of UF.

.

Meanwhile, the county continued to pay 100 percent of Fullers salary and benefits, as well as those of several other former county employees. According to county documents, Fullers salary for the 2015 fiscal year was $51,594.71 plus $14,343.33 in pooled fringe benefits.

.

Of the 12 extension positions identified in the countys projected payroll budget for the 2015 fiscal year, eight were paid 100 percent by the county, three were paid 60 percent by the state and 40 percent by the county, and one was paid 20 percent by the state and 80 percent by the county.

.

The countys reimbursement to UF for salaries and benefits for the 2015 fiscal year was $501,478 but budgeted at $582,715. Budgeted for the 2016 fiscal year was $600,200, which has again been requested for the 2017 fiscal year, according to this years Administrators Budget Workbook.

.

snip

.

Supporters of Fuller say whats been lost since his departure is a county voice in a leadership position at the Agricultural Center in exchange for several voices from the universitys headquarters in Gainesville calling for volunteers to put the matter to rest and move on.

.

Fuller told The Record in April that he and other employees were not aware of the full ramifications of the memorandum until a meeting with UF human resources staff after it was signed.

.

snip

.

Florida is an employment-at-will state, meaning an employee can be dismissed by an employer for any reason  without having to establish just cause for termination  and without warning.

.

snip

.

Momol signed Fullers last annual performance appraisal, dated Feb. 5, 2015, in which Fuller was given a commendable overall rating.

.

Comments accompanying Fullers exemplary performance in delivery/contacts read: Number of local programs and clientele contacts are admirable. Teaching skills are top notch and agent relates well to his audience. However, comments for his improvement required performance in communication and reporting skills read: A professional tone of voice with faculty, staff and volunteers is required at all times. We will appreciate your attention to this area in 2015.

.

Additional comments, lacking in Fullers three previous appraisals, said Fuller puts an extreme amount of effort into his extension programs and provides knowledge and skills that are respected throughout the community.

.

Fuller was given an exemplary rating in each of his three previous appraisals, all of which were signed by Momol.

.

snip

.

Fullers supporters say the county and UF are not abiding by Florida Statute 1004.37, dealing with county extension programs.

.

As written in Florida Statute 1004.37: Boards of county commissioners or other legally constituted governing bodies will approve or disapprove of persons recommended for extension positions in the county.

.

snip

.

In a May 24 letter from Master Gardener Nana Royer to Jim DeValerio, interim horticultural agent for St. Johns County, she said UFs statements on the Fuller situation havent helped volunteers make sense of confusing changes at the Agricultural Center over the past year.

.

I do not agree it is okay to simply stand aside, pretend all is well and let a wrong (Fullers dismissal) go unrighted, she wrote. To move forward, as you have suggested, would require that I stand on the shoulders of the bullying, the lies, and the disrespectful censorship by the UF/IFAS administration, as well as the inaction of the St. Johns County Commissioners.

.

She closed her letter with notice of her resignation as a UF/IFAS Master Gardener volunteer.

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) describes itself as the largest membership association of state legislators, but over 98% of its revenue comes from sources other than legislative dues, primarily from corporations and corporate foundations.[1] After the 2010 congressional midterm elections, ALEC boasted that among those who won their elections, three of the four former state legislators newly-elected to the U.S. Senate are ALEC Alumni and 27 of the 42 former state legislators newly-elected to the U.S. House are ALEC Alumni. (A full list of the Congressional freshmen who are ALEC alums can be found here.) [2]

.

About ALEC

.

ALEC is a corporate bill mill. It is not just a lobby or a front group; it is much more powerful than that. Through ALEC, corporations hand state legislators their wishlists to benefit their bottom line. Corporations fund almost all of ALEC’s operations. They pay for a seat on ALEC task forces where corporate lobbyists and special interest reps vote with elected officials to approve model bills. The Koch brothers — David and Charles — are the right-wing billionaire co-owners of Koch Industries. As two of the richest people in the world, they are key funders of the right-wing infrastructure, including the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and the State Policy Network (SPN). In SourceWatch, key articles on the Kochs include: Koch Brothers, Koch Industries, Americans for Prosperity, American Encore, and Freedom Partners.

.

ALECs agenda extends into almost all areas of law. Its bills undermine environmental regulations and deny climate change; support school privatization; undercut health care reform; defund unions and limit their political influence; restrain legislatures abilities to raise revenue through taxes; mandate strict election laws that disenfranchise voters; increase incarceration to benefit the private prison industry, among many other issues. LANSING  Bills for an outside legal firm to represent Gov. Rick Snyder in civil lawsuits related to the Flint drinking water crisis are costing taxpayers close to $6,500 a day, and Snyder spent almost the entire $400,000 allocated for the legal contract in February and March alone, records show.

.

Barris, Sott, Denn & Driker of Detroit, hired to represent Snyder in connection with a raft of Flint civil lawsuits in which he is named as a defendant, billed the state $343,702 between Feb. 8, when the firm started work, and March 31, according to records obtained by the Free Press under Michigans Freedom of Information Act.

.

The State Administrative Board was told March 8 the contract,  which provides for legal fees as high as $540 per hour for attorney Eugene Driker, was capped at $400,000. If the rate of billing from February and March continued into April, the cap for the contract would have been exceeded by April 11. That means Snyder’s total outside legal fees charged to the state will almost certainly exceed the $1.2-million figure quoted in March.   The cost of criminal defense representation for Snyder, which is covered under a separate contract with Warner, Norcross & Judd, is capped at $800,000.

.

“The billing in February and March was from a high volume of work due to the number of documents that needed to be produced to meet litigation demands,” Snyder spokeswoman Anna Heaton saidTuesday. “Those demands continue, though at a lower volume, so the governors office is still working with the firm to figure out how much the total contract will cost.”

.

The fees are controversial, with critics saying Snyder should use only state attorneys from the Attorney General’s Office or pay the outside firms using a legal defense fund, campaign funds or other non-taxpayer funds. Snyder says the legal fees arise directly from his official actions as governor and it is appropriate to charge them to the state.

.

The governor’s office is not subject to Michigan’s FOIA law, though pending legislation would change that. The Free Press obtained the billing records from the Department of Technology, Management and Budget, which submitted the contracts to the State Administrative Board, a body with responsibilities for approving certain state contracts.

.

.

snip

.

.

The legal fees paid to Barris, Sott, Denn & Driker do not include the cost of legal representation the Attorney Generals Office is providing Snyder in the civil lawsuits.

.

Although taxpayers are footing the bill for Snyder’s legal representation, the state is giving almost no hint of what they are getting for their money.

.

The 25 pages of billing records released under FOIA by the DTMB on May 17 contained redactions that blacked out, in their entirety, all descriptions of the work Snyder was billed for.

NAACP FILES LAWSUIT OVER FLINT WATER CRISIS

May 18, 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

State Officials, Companies Named in Class Action Civil Suit

BALTIMORE  Attorneys with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People have filed a federal class action lawsuit on behalf of people and businesses affected by the failure to provide safe drinking water to the city of Flint, Michigan.

.

The civil suit filed in U.S. District Court alleges that the state of Michigan, many city and state officials and two engineering firms hired to evaluate water quality in Flint failed to detect problems and properly treat water that caused extensive lead contamination in the city while Flint was under supervision of state-appointed emergency managers.

.

The plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit include Flint residents and members of the local branch of the NAACP, whose national attorneys are working with the firms of Cohen Milstein Sellers and Toll of Washington, D.C. and the Houston-based firm of Susman Godfrey.

.

The complaint seeks property damages, pain and suffering damages, emotional distress damages, medical monitoring, and other injunctive relief for affected city residents and businesses to be determined by the court.

.

The people of Flint have been harmed through the failure of state officials to provide professional and accountable basic services mandated by federal law and expected by any person living in a major city, said Cornell William Brooks, the national president and CEO of the NAACP. Our organization stands with the citizens of Flint to demand a clear timeline, deadline and price tag for fixing this crisis as well as effective remedies for the harms that have already occurred and complete compensation for each and every victim of this unimaginable tragedy.

.

Governor Rick Snyder is named as an individual defendant in the suit, along with six former high-ranking officials with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, and three men who were emergency managers during the prolonged exposure period. Two engineering firms hired to analyze water in the city, Lockwood, Andrews and Newnam Inc. and Veolia North America, also failed to satisfy their professional duties and affirmatively worsened the extent of the lead exposure, according to the complaint.

.

The 103-page complaint alleges that the officials and companies supervising the water system failed to properly treat the water supply for salt and other chemicals, which caused lead to leech from corroded pipes into the drinking water for years. Officials repeatedly denied and dismissed reports of poor water quality and pipe corrosion before acknowledging widespread failures to act.

.

The NAACPs Flint Branch and Michigan State Conference have diligently worked over the last two years to inform the public about the poisoned water and its potential effects on city children and residents, and called for federal and state action to provide relief.

.

The NAACP and attorneys in the case are planning to host Town Hall meetings with residents in the near future in Flint to discuss further action.
